Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Fontana, Kansas. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair analysis and nationwide centers make the process seamless. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a common method for substance detection, often preferred by employers, legal entities, and addiction professionals over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance workplaces and probation programs, the hair test excels with a 90-day detection window, observed collection method, and resistance to tampering—though urine tests remain optimal for recent (5-day) drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, suitable for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in the lab process of processing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves initial processing into a lab’s system. This verifies if the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening enables a primary quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-worthy. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a second confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at a lower concentration than alternate methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the more complex method.

Confirmation of any positive Screen result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessitated. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • High resistance to tampering: It's notably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent ingestion: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Fontana, KS? The benefits are clear. Hair testing provides a significantly longer detection window compared to urine tests, capturing substance use history over months.

The comprehensive overview offered by hair tests allows employers to make informed decisions. With a detection period of up to 90 days, the accuracy and reliability of hair testing surpass traditional methods.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
