Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ford, Kansas. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers across the country, including Ford, can perform these tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in recent years as a reliable method for substance screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is favored for strict no-drug policies due to its extended detection capability—up to 90 days—and its tamper-resistant collection process. For recent usage, within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tough to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for examination and validation. For EtG tests, additional assessments, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in a laboratory's drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory's records. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing required data entry that isn't covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary basic check for illicit substance use. While an efficient method to disregard substance use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for judicial acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and made ready for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from the hair at significantly lower levels than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation if needed. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, boosting result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It can trace a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is proving superior to urine tests in Ford, KS due to its remarkable detection accuracy. The hair test offers improved reliability by identifying substances long after usage, making it a worthwhile alternative to traditional urine tests which may miss recent or infrequent drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
