Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Franklin, Kansas. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol examinations, our specialization in hair testing supports our expansive network of centers, ready to conduct tests nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method in drug screening. Various employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are chosen by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probationary individuals. Their advantage is a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, conducted through an observed collection, making it exceedingly difficult to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drugs presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can provide an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp, delivers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or screenings above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening undertakes a preliminary, swift evaluation to identify drugs of abuse. Although it is an economical method to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to stand in court. Samples that show preliminary positive results during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a detection window extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: Hair testing can reveal drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing practices.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
