At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services to Geneseo, Kansas residents. Should you require hair drug or alcohol testing, our focus on hair testing is complemented by laboratories across the nation, including every city. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, often from the crown or body, is necessary for testing, which can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of standard drug testing practices. More and more, employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, the justice system, and those on probation prefer hair tests because they offer a more extended detection window—usually up to 90 days—are collected under supervision, and are extremely hard to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant asset in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair fibers, hair reveals a lengthy record of alcohol and drug usage. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can unveil a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening involves conducting an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. This cost-efficient method can eliminate drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that indicate potential positivity in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at substantially reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. All samples indicating preliminary positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Wins Over Urine Testing in Geneseo, KS

Hair follicle testing has increasingly been recognized for its superior performance over conventional urine tests in identifying drug usage. Boasting enhanced detection accuracy, hair tests provide more reliable insights. Unlike urine tests, the evaluation performed on hair samples extends over a more extended period, increasing the reliability of the test results.

The inherent benefits of hair testing stem from its trick-resistant nature and longer detection periods. By providing results that are hard to fake and comprehensive in scope, hair testing allows decision-makers in workplaces, courts, and rehab facilities to make informed choices. As a result, many institutions choose this method for its proven effectiveness and dependable processes.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Period in Geneseo, KS

Hair follicle tests offer a much broader view of an individual's drug history, with detection capability reaching up to 90 days. This extended window provides deeper insights into cumulative substance use, helping employers ascertain a more accurate representation of workplace behavior. It's an invaluable tool that captures behavior patterns that shorter-term tests might miss.

When employers seek a thorough understanding of an individual's substance use history, hair testing proves indispensable. This approach ensures that patterns of drug use are identified over substantial periods. Leveraging this technology enhances the recruitment process, enabling more informed hiring decisions and supporting efforts to foster a safer, substance-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Method in Geneseo, KS

Hair follicle testing is eliciting praise for its tamper-proof mechanisms, which significantly diminish the likelihood of sample tampering. Unlike urine samples, which can be deceptively manipulated, hair tests are incredibly challenging to alter or falsify, ensuring reliable and unassailable results with every sample.

This robust deterrent against tampering backs the integrity of hair tests, safeguarding the authenticity of results. The credibility and stringent protocols of hair testing methods assure employers of the validity of the data—an advantageous aspect for those implementing zero-tolerance policies, where precision is paramount. Hence, it’s preferred across multiple sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
