In Girard, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screenings. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our specialized centers nationwide perform these tests using 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. This method can be customized for drug detection or other analysis options.

The trend towards hair follicle drug testing has grown. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists prefer it over urine tests due to a 90-day detection window and secure collection, reducing cheating possibilities. Urine tests, however, are still best for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an influential technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a protracted record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeline of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent body hair amount can be acquired. Head hair refers explicitly to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory process of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s procedure. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Despite Screening being a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require confirmation.

If Screening denotes a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the main sample for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers past usage data: It delineates a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Elemental differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
