Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Greenwich Heights, Kansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and have centers available to conduct such tests across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair testing can be customized for various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance testing. This type of testing is increasingly favored by employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, court systems, and probation officers rely on hair testing due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection procedures, and resistance to tampering – though urine tests remain more reliable for drugs used within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a detailed history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it can uncover alcohol and drug patterns for up to roughly 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample sized at 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. It is advisable to use 150mg for tests that include EtG, add-ons, or exceed 10 panels. The quantity should be accurately measured on a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. References to head hair mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is first logged into the lab system. This encompasses verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, efficient way to identify drug abuse. Although it's cost-effective for excluding drug use among many samples, a positive outcome in Screening demands confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that test positive in Screening require further verification.

Should a sample appear positive in Screening, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

A positive Screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Shows historical usage: It displays a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
