Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grove, Kansas. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and maintain facilities nationwide for your convenience. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Our hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom options.

Traditionally, drug testing methods have evolved to increasingly include hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary monitoring due to their extended detection capability, which reaches up to 90 days, with direct observation reducing the potential for falsification. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a comprehensive method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When clipped near the scalp, it can reveal usage over an approximately 90-day timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easy to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirming results. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent sample of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This entails ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening process, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage: It presents a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the actual hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Grove, KS, the former demonstrates superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide a robust substance use history, detecting drug presence over a more extended period than urine tests, which only reflect recent use.

Employers benefit from hair testing's wide detection window, which captures a clearer picture of an individual's habits, crucial for maintaining safety and adherence to drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Grove, KS, offers an extended detection window, allowing for drug use history to be uncovered up to 90 days back. This attribute offers employers a comprehensive view of an individual's past substance use, critical in decision-making processes.

The long detection period of hair tests makes them invaluable when assessing potential employees' histories, ensuring a safer and more informed hiring process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Grove, KS, hair follicle tests are significantly tamper-resistant, offering a testing method that heavily reduces the risk of adulteration. This ensures that the results are reliable and cannot be easily manipulated.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
