In Oswego, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we offer a network of testing centers across the nation equipped for hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method over traditional urine tests among employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals. It's favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and those under probation supervision. The outstanding advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days through a supervised collection, making it tamper-resistant. Nonetheless, for recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can supply up to nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests which possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is notably challenging to fabricate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, rather than merely immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Variables such as hair shade and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is increasingly preferred in Oswego, KS, for its superior detection accuracy compared to urine testing. Accuracy in hair tests leads to more reliable outcomes, as these tests can identify a range of substances missed by traditional urine tests.

Employers and organizations choose hair tests for their reliability in detection. This superior option provides comprehensive results that support informed decisions.

While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests cover a broader timeline. The comprehensive analysis and minimal risk of falsification make hair testing the favored choice.

Extended Detection Window

Oswego, KS, benefits from hair follicle testing's long detection window, unmatched by other methods. This window, extending up to 90 days, offers employers a thorough examination of an individual's substance use history.

Employers gain a complete view into an employee's past behavior, aiding informed decisions in recruitment and retention. This added insight supports the creation of a safer, drug-free workplace.

Individuals looking to showcase clear substance-free status can rely on the extended timeline provided by hair tests, ensuring comprehensive and reliable results.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Oswego, KS, offer assurance against tampering, with robust measures that make sample adulteration nearly impossible. This creates trust in the results, supporting confident decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
