Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Harveyville, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we specify in hair testing and have facilities nationwide, including in Harveyville. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from your head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for substance testing. Many employers, judges, and substance abuse experts are now opting for this method over the conventional urine test. Hair tests support zero-tolerance policies and aid courts and probation determinations. They excel due to their 90-day detection span and are almost impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed chronicle of alcohol and other drug usage by locking biomarkers within the strands' fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to adulterate, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) positioned nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves processing a sample into a lab's system initially. This encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, a screened positive requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples indicated as presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test as presumptively positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at far lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical pattern: It displays a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot catch recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
