Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessment services in Haysville, Kansas. For those needing hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and we operate testing facilities in every city across the country that can execute a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the head or body, is often required. Such tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair analysis needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in drug screening methods. Many organizations, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, court systems, and probationary individuals. A significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days. The tests, conducted under direct supervision, are challenging to falsify. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within a 5-day timeframe, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of a maturing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This stage involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any ancillary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screening must be confirmed before use in legal proceedings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. This stage involves removing drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's incredibly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual variances in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
