Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Healy, Kansas. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain with numerous centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specific testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by entities with strict drug-use policies, such as employers, judicial systems, and probation programs. The primary advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy through observed collection, making it difficult to evade detection. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests maintain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The recognition of hair testing as an effective method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol, has increased. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing indicators within the strands as they grow. When hair is sampled close to the scalp, it can reveal substance use over an estimated period of three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG tests, additional panels, and tests with more than 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a hair drug test encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves registering a sample within a lab's system, which includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug usage in numerous samples, a positive result in Screening requires validation for legal admissibility. Thus, samples that test positive initially require a follow-up confirmation.

For specimens testing positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted and readied for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods, such as urine or oral fluid tests, rendering hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that initially test positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long-lasting detection: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring reliability.
  • Chronological data: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use spanning several months, beyond just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Limited to past use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Individual differences, such as hair color and growth rate, can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
