Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Herkimer, Kansas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty lies in hair testing, supported by a wide network of testing centers across the nation. Typically, your hair needs to be 1.5 to 2 inches long, collected from the crown or other parts of the body. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in recent years. An increasing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for a hair drug test over the usual urine test. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, the judicial system, and those on probation due to its longer drug detection period of up to 90 days, the monitored collection process, and its challenge to falsify results. Yet, urine tests remain the top choice for detecting drugs used in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Considered a potent instrument, hair testing is esteemed for its ability to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged account of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can yield an approximately 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately resembling a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to determine the weight of the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a commensurate quantity of body hair may be obtained. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This stage includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for abusive substances. Screening effectively weeds out drug use on most samples cost-effectively, though a positive outcome must be validated to be permissible in court. Samples demonstrating a presumptively positive result during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirming any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are cleaned as needed prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test enhances the result's accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use, beyond just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Herkimer, KS lies in its unparalleled detection accuracy. Hair testing offers a broader time frame for substance detection, identifying drug use over several months, unlike urine tests, which detect recent usage only. The consistency and reliability of hair tests surpass conventional methods, establishing them as a superior choice for employers.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window With hair follicle testing in Herkimer, KS, drug use detection is extended to around 90 days. This expansive window provides a more comprehensive analysis of an individual’s substance history, making hair tests particularly beneficial for employers seeking an extensive overview of current or prospective employees' drug habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
