Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Johnson, Kansas. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we have facilities across all cities in the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, allowing for the detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has grown in commonality for drug screenings. This testing method is increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts in lieu of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services prefer hair follicle tests due to their extended drug detection window of up to 90 days. Despite urine tests being more precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, hair tests offer a nearly tamper-proof collection process.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can present a detection timeframe of approximately 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will result in 100mg of hair, the best sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG add-ons or panels beyond ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in processing a drug test result in the laboratory encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a sample in the lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data not provided by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening consists of a swift preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient solution to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples testing positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

In instances of a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to be readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a substantially lower level than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in consonance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can discover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that provide a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal drug usage trends over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test frequently termed a "hair follicle test" actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle vs. Urine Testing: In Johnson, KS, hair follicle testing is superior to urine tests. Hair tests offer unmatched accuracy and reliability, detecting drug use for up to 90 days compared to urine’s shorter window.

The enhanced detection capabilities and resistance to evasion make hair testing a preferred choice. This method excels by providing a holistic view of an individual's substance use history, empowering informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window: Hair follicle tests in Johnson, KS can identify drug use for up to 90 days. This extended window allows employers to glean a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

Employing a longer detection period, hair tests are invaluable in screening processes, offering deeper insights into habitual or occasional substance use that urine tests might overlook due to their brief detection span.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing: In Johnson, KS, hair follicle tests are virtually tamper-proof, greatly minimizing the risk of sample adulteration and ensuring reliable outcomes.

This resistance to manipulation gives employers and authorities confidence in the integrity of the test results, which serve as a credible foundation for policy enforcement and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
