Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake Quivira, Kansas. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing with centers available across the nation that can facilitate a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair test services.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often request hair drug tests as an alternative to traditional urine tests. Employers with zero tolerance for drug use, courts, and individuals on probation prefer hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensuring reliable results and minimal risk of cheating. For recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Obtaining hair is straightforward, it is relatively challenging to tamper with, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimum sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a collection of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be collected. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial step of entering a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and efficient method to detect drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Confirmation for any positive screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical information: Provides insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot uncover recent use: There is a delay of approximately 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and growth rate can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lake Quivira, KS, the strength of hair follicle testing surpasses conventional urine testing because it offers superior detection capability and reliability. While urine tests may detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader detection window, capturing substance use up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
