In Lebo, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, they operate testing centers across all US cities. To undergo a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required from either the head or body. This method can screen for substances, including customized options beyond drugs and alcohol.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained traction in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing benefits include a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and strong resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collecting hair near the scalp can yield a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can serve as a substitute. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initiation of a sample's journey through the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although screening is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positives in screening require further verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive screening result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further processing in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug testing as the most complex technique.

For any positive screening results, Confirmation is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • High difficulty in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can map out a timeline of drug consumption patterns, beyond just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
