In Lecompton, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have Nationwide centers capable of performing these tests. Typical requirements are 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of the head or body. Hair samples are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method in drug testing procedures. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often require hair tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are employed by those with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. They offer a longer drug use detection period—up to 90 days—collected via an observed collection process, making them hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair archives a prolonged account of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. Collected close to the scalp, hair affords a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. It's straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield about 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. The term 'head hair' refers strictly to scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step confirms the proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid drug use assessment. Although Screening economically excludes drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is mandatory for legal acceptance. Samples indicating a potential positive result in Screening necessitate further verification.

When Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this process, hair is analyzed for drugs at much lower levels than other methods (urine or oral fluid), distinguishing hair analysis as one of the most demanding methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed if necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the whole lab procedure is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption over 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Manipulating hair drug testing results is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Yields historical data: It presents a timeline of substance use over extended periods, not restricted to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally costlier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variances such as hair color and personal growth patterns can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lecompton, KS, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests with its superior detection and reliability. Hair tests are resistant to tampering and provide a deeper insight into a person's drug history. While urine tests detect recent use, hair follicle testing covers a broader time span up to 90 days, offering a comprehensive profile on drug patterns and usage.

Extended Detection Window

One key advantage of hair follicle testing in Lecompton, KS is its extended detection window. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can uncover drug use over the previous 90 days. This broad detection period allows employers a more thorough understanding of an individual’s substance history, aiding in informed decision-making regarding potential hires or monitoring current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Lecompton, KS is a tamper-resistant method of drug testing, reducing the risk of sample adulteration. Compared to other tests, hair samples offer reliability and credibility, ensuring results remain unquestionable. This method’s resistance to cheating reassures employers and legal authorities of its dependability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
