Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in LeRoy, Kansas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have centers across all cities Nationwide capable of performing these tests. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically needed. Our hair assessments can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing choices.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle tests for drug screening has increased. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers often opt for hair tests. The key advantage is a longer detection timeframe for drug usage, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it virtually cheat-proof. Nevertheless, for identifying recent substance use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. This method is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or panels beyond 10, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for accurate weighing. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. 'Head hair' solely implies scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a lab's system initially. It covers the confirmation that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. It offers a cost-efficient means to negate drug use in most samples, though any sample testing positive needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed preliminarily positive at Screening must undergo additional verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a far lower concentration than techniques like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening among the most complex procedures.

Verification of any positive screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a much shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to circumvent: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs typically become traceable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared with other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In LeRoy, KS, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests with its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair analysis can trace substance use over a broader period, providing a deeper understanding of substance history, ideal for employers seeking effective monitoring solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
