Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Louisville, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers located nationwide for hair test execution. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable testing options.

Recently, drug testing trends have increasingly incorporated the hair follicle method. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer a hair drug test over the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are adopted by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers due to their main advantage: an extended detection window for substance use, usually up to 90 days, using a monitored collection process, which is nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best choice for identifying recent drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The ability of hair testing to detect drug and alcohol use has made it a valuable tool. By encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers an extended history of substance use. When taken from just above the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug usage within roughly a three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, altering it is somewhat challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches long, consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), cut close to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg of hair. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent measure of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair exclusively pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test sample in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is first processed into a lab system. This entails verifying the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination to check for drug abuse. While this step is efficient in ruling out drug use for most samples, any positive results require confirmation to stand up in legal settings. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptively positive result, more hair is sourced from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. At this phase, the aim is to extract drugs from hair at a substantially lower concentration than found in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is notably complex to execute.

Confirmation follows a positive screen result using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before proceeding to confirmation as required. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter time frame for detection.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating hair drug tests is significantly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical usage data: It delivers insights into patterns of drug use over time, not solely focusing on recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Challenges in detecting recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
