Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Mayfield, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have facilities across all cities nationwide capable of administering hair tests. To conduct these tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, usually from the crown or the body, is needed. These tests are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing possibilities.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become the preferred method for drug screenings. Many employers, judiciary systems, and experts in Substance Abuse are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation programs rely on these tests. Hair follicle drug tests have a longer detection period of up to 90 days, and the collection process is observed, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent 5-day drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history through the entrapment of biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly a 3-month period of drug and alcohol exposure. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and verification. For tests including EtG, additional panels, and/or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in the lab handling of drug test results consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This process includes ensuring the specimen was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug usage in most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation for it to be valid in legal settings. Any samples testing positive in Screening mandate a secondary verification.

When a specimen shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug testing leaves little room for deception, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Shows historical use: It reveals a pattern of drug utilization over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mayfield, KS, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides an extensive detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This superior accuracy is invaluable for employers enforcing strict drug policies or assessing potential employees thoroughly.

Hair tests eliminate many issues associated with urine tests, such as dilution or replacement tactics, ensuring high reliability. The comprehensive nature of hair testing gives employers a clearer picture of an individual's substance use, enhancing decision-making processes.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Mayfield, KS, excels with its extended detection window for drug use, covering up to a 90-day period. This extended timeframe enables a comprehensive review of an individual’s substance history, offering insight beyond what urine tests reveal.

Offering employers a broader view of their team's or applicants’ substance habits, hair tests contribute to more informed hiring and workplace safety decisions. The prolonged detection period allows a more thorough understanding of patterns and behaviors related to substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Mayfield, KS, is its resistance to tampering. Compared to urine tests, which are susceptible to various adulteration methods, hair tests offer a robust and reliable defense against sample manipulation, ensuring accuracy and trustworthiness.

The integrity of hair test results provides peace of mind, knowing that samples accurately reflect an individual’s substance use. This tamper-resistant attribute helps maintain rigorous standards in drug testing policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
