Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Midway, Kansas. When you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this field and offer testing facilities nationwide, including every city. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, to conduct these tests. Hair analyses can check for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown in prominence as a method for screening, often replacing traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts increasingly mandate hair drug testing over urine analysis. This method is favored by zero-tolerance organizations and probationary individuals for its extended detection capability of up to 90 days, ensuring reliable and hard-to-falsify results. However, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by retaining biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s infrastructure. This encompasses confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a drug use pattern over a duration, not solely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot uncover immediate use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing offers numerous advantages over urine tests in Midway, KS, offering a more precise glimpse into substance use histories. Unlike traditional urine testing, hair analysis provides a broader window of detection, catching traces other methods might miss. Its accuracy and reliability make it an excellent choice for those prioritizing comprehensive testing methodologies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Midway, KS benefit significantly from the extended detection window provided by hair follicle testing. With the capability of revealing drug use up to 90 days prior, it offers a detailed overview of a candidate or employee's substance use. This allows organizations to make informed decisions based on thorough historical data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
