Accredited Drug Testing has developed a full-service hair follicle drug testing solution in Minneapolis, Kansas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for testing. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as offer tailored testing options.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse Experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation utilize these tests. A significant advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its longer detection window for drug use, which can extend up to 90 days. The test is done under direct observation, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection (within the past 5 days), urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term historical record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily shippable.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG testing, additional screenings, and/or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is better. The sample should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. It’s important to note that head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or underarm).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in lab processing for a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was adequately sealed and shipped while assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although it's an economical method to eliminate the possibility of substance use in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples with presumed positive results need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspected to be positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is used to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves a low-concentration extraction of substances from hair compared to other methods (e.g., oral fluid or urine), due to which hair drug testing is among the toughest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples presumed to be positive are washed accordingly. Throughout the entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation, the work is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than most drug testing approaches.
  • Inconsistent results: Hair color and individual growth rate variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine tests in Minneapolis, KS? Superior detection and reliability set hair testing apart. Hair tests boast a longer detection window and are less prone to tampering, providing meticulous and robust data compared to urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
