Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Morehead, Kansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing with centers nationwide for your convenience. Testing can be performed using 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body, allowing for the detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become the preferred method for many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists, often replacing traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as judicial and probation authorities, are opting for hair drug tests. Hair testing's main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted in a monitored process, making it extremely difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for capturing recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When cut close to the head, hair can present up to an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Gathering hair is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the head offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for both testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If head hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, this exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The principal phases in lab processing of a substance test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s procedures. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening executes an initial rapid drug abuse check. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method for disregarding drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be verified for court acceptance. Samples suspiciously positive in Screening require secondary verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is selected from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at minimal concentrations compared to other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug analysis is among the toughest methods.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before verification as required. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter period.
  • Cheating is challenging: It's difficult to falsify results in a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug usage over time, not just immediate consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug screenings are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair hue and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Morehead, KS, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing can detect substances well beyond the short window that urine tests offer.

While urine tests provide results for recent use, hair tests offer a broader overview, making them more reliable for ensuring comprehensive substance history assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
