Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Moscow, Kansas. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with access points across numerous cities Nationwide where hair tests can be conducted. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair or body hair as an alternative, the hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has emerged more prominently in drug testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. With its far longer detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, and nearly impossible to manipulate during the observed collection process, hair tests are particularly favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. However, for reviewing drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests maintain the accuracy advantage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records extended usage history of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within its fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of hair containing about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair kinds (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The core components in processing a test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase involving the integration of a sample into the laboratory's systems. This step involves checking that the sample has been properly sealed and delivered, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any necessary additional information not captured by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening acts as a preliminary examination for abused drugs. While it’s a budget-friendly technique to exclude drug presence in most samples, positive results in Screening need confirmation to stand in legal settings. Samples that appear positive during Screening must undergo further validation.

Should a sample indicate positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva tests), making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Before Confirmation, all samples suspected of positivity undergo necessary washing. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards qualifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug screenings reveal drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Tampering resistance: The likelihood of falsifying a hair drug test is minimal, ensuring reliable results.
  • Historical usage pattern: It reveals drugs usage trends over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs typically need 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair may be impacted by differences in hair color or individual growth rates.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis concerns the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
