Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Murdock, Kansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing and provides testing facilities across all cities Nationwide where hair tests can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, the implementation of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent for drug testing. A growing number of employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of a hair test is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it almost impossible to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has evolved into a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands during growth, providing an extensive history of alcohol and drug usage. Close-to-scalp samples can reveal a detection span of roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process of hair is straightforward, presenting challenges to tampering, and is convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), taken nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmatory purposes. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, and/or exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, the collection of an equivalent quantity of body hair is an option. Note that 'head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The procedure in a lab for generating a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system, involving checks to ensure proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and performing any additional data entry that isn't available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Though it serves as an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening mandates confirmation for judicial admissibility. Samples appearing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In scenarios where Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the existing sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drug extraction occurs at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which underscores why hair drug testing is the most demanding methodology.

Confirmation is undertaken for any positive screen via methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug usage for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter window presented by urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating in hair drug tests is considerably tough, contributing to result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: The test reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate drug use: Detection of drugs in hair necessitates approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Compared to other methods, hair drug testing entails greater expense.
  • Varying results due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences which influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis centers on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
