Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Narka, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is necessary, we excel in hair testing with centers available nationwide that are equipped for this purpose. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or alternatively on the body. Hair analysis caters to drug detection, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized assessments.

Recently, the trend in drug evaluation leans towards hair follicle analysis. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor this over the traditional urine exam. Hair follicle tests are preferred for stringent no-drug policies and probation cases. Their main advantage lies in the extended drug usage detection window, reaching up to 90 days and conducted under observation, making them nearly impervious to manipulation. However, urine tests still prevail for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a timeline for substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's core as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection period of roughly 3 months for substances like alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in width) near the scalp yields 100mg, forming the perfect specimen for initial screening and verification. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, the same amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Body hair covers other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for a drug test result entails four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves verifying that the sample remained sealed and was shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for substances of abuse. While it economically helps exclude drug use in many samples, any positive screening must be validated for court acceptance. Samples with likely positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a likely positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at substantially lower concentrations than with alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome happens via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests trace drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter windows of urine tests.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating on a hair test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical use: Offers insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair screening typically incurs higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the scalp-located follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
