Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Navarre, Kansas. For those in need of a hair-related drug or alcohol test, we are experts in this field, with testing facilities available in every major city across the country capable of administering such tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, with alternatives available from other body areas. Hair tests can be tailored for specific drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized requirements.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle methods in recent years. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse programs are opting for hair testing over the more traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with stringent no-drug policies, the judicial system, and those on parole, given their extended ability to track drug usage—up to 90 days—through monitored sample collection which minimizes tampering. However, it's worth noting for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly effective.

What it is, How it works

Detecting drug and alcohol use has increasingly utilized hair testing as an effective measure. Hair reveals an extended record of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection window for alcohol and other drugs extending up to about 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. Recommended for EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, is a specimen of 150mg. We advise measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing for a drug test result comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s workflow. This ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening efficiently rules out drug usage on most samples, to be viable in legal scenarios, a positive screen necessitates confirmation. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require a secondary validation.

In instances where a sample is suspected positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as a more intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result involves utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test presents a significant challenge, thereby increasing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, beyond only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
