Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive solution for hair follicle drug testing services in Norway, Kansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol exam, our expertise in the field sets us apart, with testing facilities available in cities across the Nation to conduct a hair analysis reliably. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown, or in some cases body hair, is required. These tests are capable of screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle tests have become a more prominent method for drug detection. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair drug testing is its extended detection timeline, generally up to 90 days, with an observed collection method to prevent tampering. However, in cases involving drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the superior method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is considered a potent method for identifying use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can present up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, modification is challenging, and shipping is effortless.

A 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for assessment and validation. For EtG scenarios, add-ons, and/or evaluations above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In case of missing scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair denote exclusively scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (e.g., facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab procedure of drug test analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This encompasses validating proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though it's a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive result requires validation for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and processed for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a more intricate methodology.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Norway, KS
When comparing testing options, hair follicle testing eclipses traditional urine tests with its superior detection capabilities and reliability. While urine tests cover only recent usage, hair testing provides a much broader detection window, making it invaluable for employers seeking a thorough review of an individual's substance history. The accuracy of hair follicle tests in capturing historical drug use makes them a preferred choice.

Urine tests may fall short on accuracy when attempting to detect long-term substance use; however, hair tests offer more certainty. This testing method equips employers with clear insights and supports adherence to drug-free policies, reinforcing a safe and reliable workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Norway, KS
Hair follicle tests expand the detection window for substance use, capable of revealing drug activities spanning up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive insight enables employers to make more informed decisions regarding potential hires or current staff members by evaluating their full substance history, beyond the immediate time frame captured by urine tests.

Such extended detection capabilities assure employers of a reliable view into an individual's habits or prior substance dependencies, forming a critical part in maintaining safe and responsible organizational operations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Norway, KS
Hair follicle testing significantly mitigates against sample adulteration, presenting a near-impenetrable barrier to tampering efforts. This credible method ensures that the results are both trustworthy and definitive. Employees have limited scope to alter or manipulate outcomes, providing tamper-resistant assurances to employers.

The robustness of this testing methodology assures employers that they are receiving genuine data about an employee's substance history, fostering a reliable, substance-free environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
