Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Parkerfield, Kansas. Should you require a hair or alcohol screening, our company excels in hair testing through numerous centers across all US cities. To conduct a hair examination, generally 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair assessments can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for various testing specifications.

Recently, conducting drug tests now often involves hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts opt for hair testing over the typical urine procedure. Hair follicle exams are preferred by organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. Its main advantages are a prolonged detection span reaching up to 90 days, a supervised collection, and minimal tampering risk. Conversely, for the latest 5 days drug use, urine assessments remain the unrivaled choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Biomarkers are trapped in the strands of growing hair, providing a long-term overview of alcohol and drug usage. When hair samples are collected close to the scalp, they can offer a detection period for drugs and alcohol that extends up to approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp can produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. It involves ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be corroborated for it to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples testing presumptive positive are washed as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Highly secure: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring results are more accurate.
  • Provides historical insight: It illustrates drug usage patterns over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
