Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Partridge, Kansas. When in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities present in all major U.S. cities. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required for testing, offering evaluations for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace in drug testing methodologies. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers rely on these tests due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days. They're collected in a monitored environment, making them hard to falsify. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. It offers an extended timeline of substance usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, equivalent body hair can be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary intake of the sample into the lab’s system. It includes checks to confirm the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it is cost-effective for ruling out drugs in many cases, a positive result requires confirmation for court validity. Samples presumed positive in screening demand further confirmation.

For presumptive positives at the Screening stage, an additional portion from the original specimen is taken for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at lesser concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the challenge of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The laboratory review process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests trace drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timespan of urine tests.
  • High integrity: Due to the difficulty in cheating, the results are generally more precise.
  • Chronological insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have a higher cost than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rates individually affect metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often incorrectly implies that the follicle is tested, when in truth, it is the hair strand itself that is analyzed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
