Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Perry, Kansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our company excels in hair testing with centers located in cities throughout the country ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the crown or body for testing. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for substance testing. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services. One main advantage is its extended detection window—up to 90 days—performed under observation, minimizing the chance of tampering, though urine tests are still ideal for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history since it captures biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can deliver an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, moderately tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp, equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirming. For EtG, add-on services, or examinations beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the sample. If hair from the scalp is not available, a comparable amount of body hair is a viable substitute. Note that when mentioning head hair, the reference is exclusively to scalp hair. All other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.) are termed as body hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result in laboratories: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is first integrated into a lab’s system. It includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent adequately, providing it with a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any further data entry required beyond what an electronic custody chain might supply.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. Although a cost-efficient measure to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening result needs verification to be accepted legally. Any samples testing positive at the screening stage are subjected to further confirmation.

Should a sample be suspected positive after Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drug isolation from hair happens at a much lower concentration than found in other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most complicated to execute.

Confirming any positive result from screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Detects drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a usage pattern over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Non-immediate detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detected in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Remember: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand being tested, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
