Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Phillipsburg, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing expert hair and alcohol testing. Serving nationwide, our centers are well-equipped to conduct hair assessments. Typically, detection requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair and can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method over recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for these tests due to their extensive detection window, sometimes reaching 90 days. This observed procedure is difficult to evade, yet for tracing drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair drug testing is considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair, it chronicles a lengthy history of substance use. When sampled close to the scalp, it can offer a detection time frame of nearly 90 days for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

An optimal sample for analysis and validation consists of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures involved in a laboratory's processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the introduction of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid examination for forbidden substances. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive findings require Confirmation for court acceptance. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Upon a positive indication in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at reduced concentrations compared to alternative techniques (like urine or saliva), which renders hair drug testing the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that test positive are cleaned before confirmation when required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is ISO / IEC 17025 certified.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, thereby increasing result precision.
  • Historical insights: This method reveals patterns of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair between 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing procedures.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
