Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Plains, Kansas. Our expertise in hair testing is available at various testing centers nationwide. For a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are generally required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over urine tests. This method suits those with zero-tolerance policies on drugs including businesses, legal bodies, and probationary individuals. Its advantage lies in detecting drug use over nearly 90 days through a supervised collection process, with low chance of evasion, although the urine test is still optimal for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing markers within the growing hair fiber. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the sample is tough to tamper with, and it is conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of sample is suggested. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is advised. If scalp hair can't be provided, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample in a laboratory system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents the initial swift spot-check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court validity. Presumptively positive samples in screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternate methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug testing stands as the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is done with methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Reflects historical usage: It reveals a timeline of drug use over a duration instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
