Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Prescott, Kansas. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and we have facilities Nationwide for conducting hair tests. Generally, hair from the crown, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair, may be used. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in the drug testing landscape. Increasingly, employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection window which can capture drug use for up to 90 days. While they're highly secure being collected under direct observation, urine tests remain superior for screening recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair fibers encapsulate biomarkers, offering an extended history of alcohol and drug consumption. When strands are taken near the scalp, they can reveal substance use over approximately 3 months. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and can be easily transported.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. When scalp hair is unattainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocates a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and handles any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though cost-effective for excluding drug presence in the majority of cases, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample present presumptively positive results in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples considered presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with short detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical context: They reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not simply recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Important: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine testing methods, hair testing emerges superior in Prescott, KS. Accurate and reliable, hair tests minimize error margins, boasting an unmatched detection capability over longer periods, making them ideal for comprehensive evaluations, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection stripe.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing dramatically extends the detection window for drug use, up to a remarkable 90 days. In Prescott, KS, this robust method provides employers a thorough view of an individual’s substance history, offering significant insights over the long-term behavioral patterns rather than fleeting results produced by shorter-term testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Prescott, KS benefits from the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing. This method significantly reduces <% risk of sample adulteration %>, ensuring trustworthy results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
