Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rantoul, Kansas. When a hair or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with locations across the country ready to conduct these tests. Hair samples from the crown or body (1.5 to 2 inches) are acceptable. Analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has recently become a more common approach among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation for their advantages, including a detection span of up to 90 days, collected with direct supervision, and being nearly tamper-proof. However, for drug use detection in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The application of hair testing has emerged as a significant technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair offers an extended historical record of substance use. If taken adjacent to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol intake over a period of up to three months. Gathering hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section composed of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides an ideal 100mg sample for analysis. For tests involving EtG, additional markers, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair not be available, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure where a sample is introduced into a lab's system. It ensures the sample's seal and shipment are intact, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not available through electronic chain systems.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances, acting as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most samples. A positive result from Screening, however, must undergo Confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Presumptive positives in the Screening phase lead to additional hair extraction from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other forms like urine, making hair drug testing one of the most challenging procedures.

Confirmation for any positive findings from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The process covering from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter timeframes.
  • Hard to deceive: The integrity of hair drug tests makes tampering extremely challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Offers retrospective insights: Hair analysis can indicate patterns of drug usage over time, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days before drugs become evident in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair testing is generally pricier compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair strands.

Note: What are commonly called “hair follicle tests” actually assess the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
