Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Redfield, Kansas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities in all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or other body parts is necessary. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent times. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor this method over standard urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces and probation requirements, these tests offer longer drug detection periods, potentially up to 90 days, and are hard to tamper with, though urine tests still dominate for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol use. The fibers of growing hair trap biomarkers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and other substances. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG or additional tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. Head hair specifically implies scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result is divided into four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was properly sealed and transported, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody process is completed.

Screening is a preliminary, swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening results is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus increasing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can showcase a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Redfield, KS, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests identify drug use over an extended period, making it difficult to falsify results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
