Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Reno, Kansas. For hair drug or alcohol exams, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with centers nationwide for hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and probation officers. Their main advantage is a longer detection window for drugs, covering up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and minimizing tamper risks. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When collected close to the scalp, hair analysis can cover up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, expanded tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial cataloging of a sample into the lab’s system, which involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial, cost-efficient way to check for drug abuse. While it can effectively eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation step.

If the Screening stage indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests recognize drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a brief detection window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are very challenging to cheat on, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical usage pattern: Hair drug tests offer insights into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Costliness: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While these tests are sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", they actually assess the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Reno, KS, hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests for several reasons. Its superior accuracy and reliability mean that employers and legal entities can trust the results. Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides a longer detection window, ensuring thorough assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
