Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug tests in Riverton, Kansas. If requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing, experts in hair exams, offer test centers across all US cities capable of conducting a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head crown or body are used. Hair analyses check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing options.

Recently, employing hair follicle drug tests as a method for drug testing is increasing. Several employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer a hair test over the standard urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals rely on hair follicle tests. The key advantage is its extended detection time, up to 90 days, almost impossible to manipulate, though urine tests remain better for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance use by ensnaring biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to gather, reasonably challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional analytes, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial assimilation of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary swift inspection for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug consumption in the majority of specimens, a positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Any specimens exhibiting presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases where a specimen shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a substantially reduced concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing as needed before validation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Validation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and authorization to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which present a shorter detection span.
  • Improbable to deceive: It is immensely challenging to falsify a hair drug assessment, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical context: It reveals a pattern of substance usage over an extended timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
