Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rome, Kansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair evaluations, with multiple testing centers available nationwide, including all cities. A minimum requirement of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances through customized options.

Recently, the approach to drug assessments has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation services. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection window, typically reaching up to 90 days, collected through a supervised process, which is nearly impossible to deceive. However, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcoholic substances and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the threads of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair may present up to an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory processing of a sample into a laboratory’s infrastructure. This consists of checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift assessment for drug misuse. Whereas Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, further hair is drawn from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It can provide a timeline of drug involvement over a span, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug-testing strategies.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
