Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rozel, Kansas. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol screenings, our specialty lies in hair testing, available at centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head's crown or body for testing. Hair assays can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more common procedure for drug screening in recent years. They are increasingly preferred by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Courts, zero-tolerance employers, and probationers rely on hair tests due to their extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring observed collection and preventing manipulation. However, for recent, within-5-day drug use, urine tests provide the most precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture long-term indicators by embedding biomarkers in the hair as it develops. When collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil) from nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or beyond 10-panel assessments, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an identical amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process includes four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry that is not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary, expedient assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need further verification.

If the sample indicates a presumptive positive at Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screen is carried out by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a detection capability for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Difficult to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, increasing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical context: It showcases a record of drug use over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited for recent detection: It generally takes 5-7 days post-use for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Individual differences like hair color and growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually concerns the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rozel, KS, hair follicle testing significantly outperforms urine testing in detecting drugs. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, identifying substance use over a longer timeframe, typically up to 90 days, compared to the shorter span covered by urine tests.

Employers and authorities appreciate the reliability of hair tests, which are less prone to manipulation and can chart a more comprehensive drug use history than traditional urine tests. This ensures a higher level of testing fidelity.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Rozel, KS provides an extensive detection window of up to 90 days, much longer than conventional methods. This feature allows employers to better understand an individual's substance use history, beneficial for thorough vetting processes.

Employers value the broad detection range of hair tests for offering a clear picture of past substance use, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of an applicant's or employee's drug habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
