In Sabetha, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in drug and alcohol hair tests, we provide multiple testing locations across the country ready to serve you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular for drug screenings across various organizations, including employers, courts, and addiction specialists. As opposed to traditional urine tests, hair follicle tests are favored for zero-tolerance environments, such as workplaces and probation programs, due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days and the difficulty in tampering with results.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a valuable method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds a long-term record of drugs and alcohol, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there's an absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair signifies all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory handling of a drug test result consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes an initial rapid review for drugs of abuse. While Screening cost-effectively rules out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen needs affirmation to be valid in court. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are pulled from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: It's quite challenging to falsely pass a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Gives historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not for immediate use detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
