In Selden, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol screenings, our centers are available nationwide to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Hair testing is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers trust hair tests due to their extended detection period up to 90 days. These tests are collected under observation and are difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use spanning up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to adulterate, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. Note that head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the drug test laboratory procedure include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This stage ensures the specimen was sealed and transported properly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug use. Although Screening is economically efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples with preliminary positive results need a secondary confirmation.

When Screening indicates a preliminary positive result, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this process, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as required before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect substance use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more compared to other methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the assessment targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
