Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Severance, Kansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our company excels in hair analysis with testing sites available nationwide in all major cities for your convenience. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body hair may often be used. Analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly utilized hair follicle examination. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and professionals specialized in Substance Abuse now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine assessments. Organizations endorsing a strict no drug use policy, legal courts, and probationary individuals often opt for these tests. The chief advantage lies in the hair test's extended detection timeframe, uncovering drug use for up to 90 days, all conducted under observed conditions, making deception highly unlikely. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug exposure within the initial 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, the same amount of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the first processing phase of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves assuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples that presumptively test positive during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening stage, more hair is withdrawn from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in some other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is extremely hard to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: A pattern of drug use can be traced over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair hue and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
