In Shields, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive hair follicle drug testing service. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, we provide nationwide testing facilities for convenient access. For accurate results, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for the procedure, enabling the detection of various substances and customizable testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method over traditional urine tests for many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Their increased use is due to the longer detection period of up to 90 days and the secure, observed collection process, which minimizes cheating risks. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a formidable method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for substances and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This procedure includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples with a preliminary positive in Screening necessitate additional affirmation.

For samples with a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, doping substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening remains the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumed positive result undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The overall lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers past consumption data: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug exams generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
