Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Silver Lake, Kansas. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these services, maintaining testing facilities across all cities nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, which can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the method of drug testing has increasingly favored the hair follicle drug test. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often mandate a hair drug test over a typical urine test. This testing is particularly used by employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation services. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection method, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair samples may provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG testing, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When specifying head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not present in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening represents a preliminary, rapid assessment for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), attributing to the complexity of performing hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a reduced detection timeline.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It offers a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become traceable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Silver Lake, KS: Hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Instead of focusing on recent drug use like urine tests, hair tests provide a lengthy detection window, essentially making them tamper-proof and highly dependable. This ensures a clearer, broader picture of substance use patterns.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle drug tests cover a wider timeframe and are resistant to deceit. This testing technique confidently detects drug use over months, which urine tests cannot match. Consequently, hair testing is ideal for employers requiring comprehensive drug test results, further bolstering their reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Silver Lake, KS: Hair follicle testing offers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history over a longer period, up to 90 days. This extended detection window provides a well-rounded assessment for employers, helping them understand current and past substance use behaviors, assisting in making informed decisions.

The lengthy detection window of hair follicle testing is crucial for employers who need to evaluate past substance use. By covering a period of up to 90 days, hair tests allow employers to see a more complete picture of an employee or applicant's drug use, beyond what typical urine tests reveal.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
