Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Rossville, Kansas. Whether seeking tests for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis and operate testing centers Nationwide across all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing choices.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of drug testing regimes. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair tests over standard urine analysis. Such tests are used by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probationers. Hair follicle testing's key advantage is its extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making it challenging to deceive. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of drugs and alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) close to the scalp is needed to acquire 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for evaluating a drug test result consists of four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves checking if the sample has been properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The end-to-end laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to fake: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the credibility of the outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It delivers a timeline of drug use over a period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inactive for recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days before drugs are noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually come at a higher cost than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Rossville, KS, the former offers notable advantages. Hair tests excel in detecting drug use over longer periods, which is crucial for thorough assessments.

The reliability of hair testing minimizes the chances of false negatives, providing employers and authorities with a more accurate reflection of an individual's substance history than urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
