Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in St. Francis, Kansas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair analysis, with centers across all cities nationwide that can conduct hair testing. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals typically opt for hair analysis. Key advantages include a prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, making it hard to falsify. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair encapsulates a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When samples are taken from the scalp, they can provide an approximately 3-month window for detecting substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, slightly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If hair from the scalp is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of processing a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is utilized for a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While it is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening requires validation to be court-admissible. Any samples identified as positive during Screening necessitate a confirmatory test.

For samples that test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for confirming any positive screening results. All samples marked as positive presumptively are washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation aligns both with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests assess drug use for up to 90 days, offering longer detection periods than urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Due to the precise nature of hair testing, tampering is challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: This method provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not restricted to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It typically takes around 5-7 days for hair to show detectable levels of drugs.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair shaft and not the follicle residing under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
