Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Stark, Kansas. Specializing in this testing method, we provide services nationwide, including alcohol and customized options. For most tests, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity due to its effectiveness. It serves employers with strict substance policies and is favored by courts for its long detection window of up to 90 days, offering stringent accuracy that urine tests may lack within the first 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a lengthy history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the growing hair fiber. When collected near the scalp, hair provides a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal sample for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is recommended. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage includes ensuring that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for drug use. While Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples which test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample proves presumptively positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, the drugs are removed from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying why hair drug analysis is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes happens via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples presumed positive are laundered before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate results: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis applies to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has undeniable strengths over urine testing in Stark, KS. Benefits include superior accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent use, hair follicles can reveal drug use over a much longer period. This advantage helps companies maintain stringent drug-free workspaces by identifying habitual users more effectively.

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair tests offer a wider detection window. They deliver insights into an individual's drug use that urine tests simply can't. This makes hair follicle testing appealing for Stark, KS employers who seek comprehensive employee assessments.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a significant asset in Stark, KS. Capable of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, hair tests provide a broader view of an individual's substance history. For employers, this means more informed decisions regarding prospective and current employees.

Unlike other tests, the expansive detection range offers a historical overview of substance use. In Stark, KS, companies benefit from this exhaustive insight, enhancing their assessment capabilities. Employers gain a clear picture of an individual's long-term habits, ensuring a safer and more responsible workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Stark, KS, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant testing method that minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests that can be manipulated with relative ease, hair tests deter attempts to alter results due to their stringent collection and testing procedures, preserving their integrity.

Employers gain confidence in the accuracy of results, as hair tests are nearly impossible to corrupt. This reliability ensures that the data used for hiring or compliance purposes is valid. The tamper-resistant nature of hair testing builds trust in the screening process and safeguards against deceptive practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
