Offering a comprehensive approach to hair follicle drug testing in Thayer, KS, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to source. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair-based tests with facilities nationwide ready to assist. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head is typically required, but other body hair may be considered. Our tests extend to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in the drug testing landscape. Various entities including employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair testing over traditional urine methods. It's favored for its extended detection window—up to 90 days—offering a tamper-resistant collection experience. However, urine tests still lead in detecting recent use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use within up to a roughly three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, extensions, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair may be taken. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome encompass four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's database. This step entails confirming the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entries not featured in an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening represents an initial, cursory check for substances of abuse. While it's an economical way to mostly negate drug usage, a positive screening must be verified for legal standing. Any samples tentatively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a Screening phase indicates a possible positive result, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn from the hair in far lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g. urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption over 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical information: It reveals a pattern of substance use across a timeline rather than only the latest use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in findings: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
