Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Timken, Kansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests, with centers located in every city nationwide that can perform hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased. Numerous employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under supervision. The key advantage is an extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, through an observed process, making it nearly immune to tampering. However, for recent drug consumption within 5 days, urine tests are still more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, it offers a significant retrospective view of alcohol and other substances. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s systems. This part features ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an inexpensive method to exclude drug usage from most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows preliminary positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this step, drugs are sourced from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are cleansed as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Deceiving a hair drug test is highly challenging, hence its results are more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
