Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug screening in Turon, Kansas. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with testing facilities available in all cities across the country to conduct hair screening. Typically, you require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body, which can be utilized in most scenarios. Hair analysis can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, the approach to drug examination has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are mandating hair drug analysis instead of standard urine evaluations. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals on probation. Its primary advantage is a significantly longer detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it almost impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for drug use detected within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair traps biomarkers in its fibers, offering a long-term record of substance use. When taken near the scalp, it can show traces of alcohol and drugs for about 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair fibers (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for assessing and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial entry into the laboratory system. This stage includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Despite Screening being an economical means to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is achieved via techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation whenever needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Cheating is difficult: Hair drug tests offer high accuracy due to the difficulty of tampering.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of substance usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and variations in individual hair growth may influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Testing Over Urine Testing in Turon, KS
Hair follicle testing stands out with its ability to detect substance use more accurately compared to traditional urine tests. This method is less prone to manipulation, offering a longer detection window and reliable outcomes, enhancing its suitability for employers and regulatory bodies prioritizing accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
